A 30-year-old man drowned in a swimming pool at a midtown apartment complex Sunday night, authorities said.

Tucson Fire Department paramedics responded to the complex July 16 at 9 p.m. in the 4200 block of East 29th Street, near South Columbus Boulevard, said Capt. Andy Skaggs, a fire department spokesman.

People walking by the secured swimming area saw the man at the bottom of the pool and called 911, Skaggs said.

The man was pulled out of the pool and when paramedics arrived they began treatment and took the man to a hospital where he later was pronounced dead, said Skaggs.

Skaggs advised swimmers not to swim alone, but rather have someone at the pool while swimming.

Since January, this was the fifth drowning in Pima County. There have been four near drownings, according to data reported to the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona.
