An 8-year-old boy died after being shot in the chest with an air rifle in St. David, the Cochise County Sheriff's Office says.

The boy's shooting happened just after 5 p.m. Monday, a news release said.

Deputies found the boy with a wound to his chest from a high-powered air rifle firing .22 caliber pellets, the release said.

Emergency first aid was administered on site before the child was taken to the intersection of Arizona 80 and East Apache Powder Road, where he was transferred to emergency medical personnel.

The boy was taken to a hospital in Benson where he was pronounced dead about an hour after the shooting, the release said.

More details about the child's death has not been released.
