A resident of a tiny town an hour southeast of Tucson has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for robbing two Tucson banks last year.
James D. Munkus of St. David — population 1,709 in the 2010 census -- was sentenced Tuesday in Tucson by U.S. Chief District Judge Raner C. Collins.
Munkus, 55, previously pleaded guilty to two counts of bank robbery for the holdups that took place over a five day period in early 2017 and netted him $67,000.
In the first, on Jan. 9, Munkus used a fake bomb to hold up an eastside branch of Pima Federal Credit Union and made off with $3,000, said a news release from the United States Attorney in Arizona.
Five days later, Munkus made off with more than $64,000 after using a handgun to rob an eastside branch of US Bank, the news release said.
Authorities caught up with Munkus in Alabama and arrested him in March 2017.
Tucson Police Department assisted the FBI's investigation of the case.
