A Pima County jury has convicted a Tucson man on multiple charges stemming from a 2016 crash that killed former state Senator and county supervisor, Ann Day.

Jarrad Barnes was convicted of negligent homicide, criminal damage, endangerment, driving with an illegal drug and possession of marijuana, said Krisanne LoGalbo, a Pima County Superior Court spokeswoman.

Barnes was found not guilty of driving under the influence.

The jury also found Barnes not guilty of manslaughter, but chose to convict him on the lesser included offense of negligent homicide, LoGalbo said.

At about 8 a.m. on May 2, 2016, Barnes was driving on East Ina Road near Westward Look Resort when he crossed the median and struck Day’s car, which was then struck from behind by a pickup truck, according to Pima County Sheriff Department records.

Witnesses saw Barnes’ car “bouncing off of curbs” before the crash and Barnes displayed signs of intoxications when he was questioned by deputies at the scene.

A search of Barnes’ car turned up a glass drug pipe and a bag of marijuana. Barnes told detectives that he’d smoked marijuana the night before the crash.

The trial began April 3 and lasted seven days, with the jury beginning deliberations Tuesday afternoon and returning a verdict shortly before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
