The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has booked and charged a driver involved in the vehicle collision that killed former Pima County Supervisor Ann Day.

Jarrad Barnes, 24, was booked into Pima County Jail, shortly after being released from the hospital Saturday evening, and charged with one count each of manslaughter and driving under the influence.

About 8 a.m. Saturday, Day was driving east on East Ina Road near Westward Look Resort when Barnes, who was driving a Chevrolet Impala, crossed the median and struck her Toyota Prius. Day’s vehicle was then struck by a pickup truck from behind, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.

According witnesses the Impala was seen β€œbouncing off of curbs and driving at a high rate of speed in excess of 80 mph” before the crash, Nanos said.

Day, 77, was taken to Banner-University Medical Center and pronounced dead.

Barnes and the driver of the pickup were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.

Day represented the county’s District 1 as a Republican for two decades before not seeking re-election in 2011.

Day is also the sister to former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and served 10 years on the state Senate.
