Pima County Sheriff's Department deputies conduct a crime investigation after a man attempting to break into some homes died on Jan. 7, 2019 near Tucson, Ariz. 

A man who attempted to break into a string of homes south of Tucson died while being taken into custody, officials say. 

Deputies were dispatched to the 1200 block of East Summit Street, near Old Nogales Highway, at around 3:30 a.m. for a welfare check, according to department spokesperson Deputy James Allerton. 

When deputies arrived, they learned a man had attempted to break into multiple homes on Summit Street.

According to Allerton, there was a shooting at one of the homes, but it is unknown who initiated the shooting. The resident was injured and transported to the hospital, but the extent of his injuries are unknown. 

Allerton said the suspect became unresponsive while being taken into custody. Deputies performed life-saving measures, according to Allerton, but the man was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. The official cause of death was not confirmed.   

This is an ongoing investigation. No additional details have been released at this time.
