Salma Rodriguez and her boyfriend, Ivan Alejandro Portillo, were sentenced on Aug. 12, for their roles in the death of Rodriguez's 10-month-old son on Mother's Day in 2017.ย 

A man involved in the 2017 death of an infant was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday.

Ivan Alejandro Portillo Herrera received the sentence for manslaughter and a lifetime of probation for child abuse, according to Krisanne LoGalbo, a Pima County Superior Court spokeswoman.

Jose Valenzuela, who died in May 2017 at 10 months old, had severe and chronic head trauma, theย ย Arizona Daily Star reported at the time.

Herrera and the babyโ€™s mother, Salma Rodriguez, were arrested on felony child abuse charges on May 12, 2017, and indicted on first-degree murder charges 10 days later. Both took a plea deal on reduced charges of manslaughter.

Rodriguezโ€™s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 3.

Herrera, who is in the country illegally, will be turned over to immigration officials and likely deported when he is released from prison.
