A motorcyclist died after a crash late Friday night in Tucson's west side, officials said.
Tucson Fire medics attempted to render aid to Leonard A. Gastelo, 49, but he was pronounced dead on scene.
The Tucson Police Department and Tucson Fire medics responded to the report of a motorcycle crash in the 2400 block of South Mission Road, near West 36th Street at 11 p.m. Friday, said Frank Magos, Tucson Police Department spokesman.
According to interviews, Gastelo was driving a 2014 Harley Davidson southbound on South Mission Road. As the road began to curve west, he lost control of the motorcycle and struck the concrete median, the Tucson Police Department said in a news release.
The crash caused Gastelo and his motorcycle to slide several feet, stopping on a northbound lane of Mission Road, the department said.
Gastelo was not wearing a helmet. Interviews and roadway evidence indicate speed was a factor in the crash, the department said.
Mission Road was closed down for a few hours overnight between 36th Street and West Silverlake Road while detectives investigated, Magos said.
This investigation is ongoing.
