A Tucson man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection with a fatal crash that occurred south of Tucson while he was smuggling people into Arizona.

On Aug. 9, 2024, Border Patrol agents tried to stop a Chevrolet Tahoe near Arivaca on suspicion that the driver, Samuel Lopez-Ozuna, 20, was smuggling people into Arizona.

The driver fled but crashed immediately, said a news release from the US Attorney's Office in Arizona. Seven people being smuggled were ejected from his vehicle. One person died and three were seriously injured, the release said.

U.S. District Judge Angela M. Martinez sentenced Lopez-Ozuna to 10 years after he pleaded guilty to transporting migrants for profit, resulting in death, the release said.
