A Pima County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man who had a sworn drawn as he came toward deputies, the Sheriff's Department says.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department gave the following account in a news release Sunday:

Deputies were sent to the 4800 block of South Palo Verde at about 10 p.m. Saturday. A 911 caller reported a man was yelling outside of a hotel room and waving a sword.

When deputies tried to communicate with him, the man removed the sword from its sheath and advanced on them.

A deputy fired his department-issued handgun, striking the man. Deputies rendered first-aid until Rural Metro Fire Department personnel arrived. The man was pronounced dead on scene.

No other information has been released.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team has been activated to handle the criminal investigation of the incident. The Tucson Police Department is the lead investigating agency for the shooting involving the deputy. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a separate investigation to determine if any policy violations occurred. As is standard practice, all findings will be forwarded to the Pima County Attorney’s Office.
