STK crime scene

An armed man "in crisis" was shot and killed by police Thursday night on Tucson's south side after police say was firing a gun multiple times.

The incident started about 9:30 p.m. when police were called to a residence in the 100 block of West Bilby Road. As officers arrived, they learned the man had "discharged his firearm in the air multiple times," according to a news release Friday to the department's X account.

The man then began firing "multiple rounds at which time an officer fired his department-issued rifle, striking the suspect," the news release said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was wounded.

The identity of the man had not been released as of early Friday.

No information was provided on whether the gunman was shooting toward officers.

The multi-agency Pima Regional Critical Incident Team is handling the criminal investigation. A separate internal probe into the handling of the incident also is being conducted.

Once the investigation is complete it will go to the Pima County Attorney's Office, officials said.
