Wilbur Nimmons

A Sun Tran bus driver was arrested Thursday night after he attacked a passenger with a knife after being hit with a grapefruit, court documents show.

Wilbur Nimmons, 62, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault after he allegedly sliced a passenger’s left arm during a confrontation that started after Nimmons was struck by a grapefruit, according to an interim complaint filed in the Pima County Justice Court.

The incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. in the 300 block of West Grant Road near North Oracle Road, according to the Tucson Police Department.

Nimmons was on his regular route and training another driver when an argument began between him and a passenger, court records show.

The argument continued and as the passenger started to exit the bus, he threw a grapefruit at Nimmons, striking him in the arm, documents say.

Nimmons, carrying a knife, then followed the unidentified man off the bus.

Nimmons “pursued him swinging the knife,” according to court records, eventually slicing the man’s left arm.

The wounded passenger was taken to the hospital. His injuries are not life threatening, the complaint says.

No other passengers were wounded.

A spokeswoman for Sun Tran on Friday declined to comment as this is still an ongoing investigation with Tucson police, she said. She referred all questions to Tucson police.

Sun Tran is waiting until the investigation is complete to make any decision on Nimmons’ employment status, a spokeswoman for the city said.
