A suspected impaired driver, who lost control of his car, crashed into another vehicle and killed two elderly people Thursday, police said.

The crash occurred at 2:40 p.m. on East Golf Links Road, between Alvernon Way and East Ajo Way, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

A driver heading northeast on Golf Links lost control of the car and it jumped over the median and went into oncoming traffic, striking a car and killing the elderly man and woman, Dugan said.

The driver then climbed out of his car, and the initial investigators on scene β€œcould see he had signs of impairment,” said Dugan. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was the sole occupant of the car.

β€œImpairment and speed appear to be contributing factors in the crash,” Dugan said.

Investigators were still working Thursday night to notify the family of the two who were killed, Dugan said. He said he did not know if the two were married or related.

The investigation is continuing.
