A body found miles away from an early morning shootout during a home invasion might be one of the intruders, officials say.
Deputies were called about 4:20 a.m. to a home in the 2200 block of West Oregon Street, near South Mission and West Drexel roads, after reports of gunfire, said Deputy Cody Gress, a spokesman for the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Residents told deputies they exchanged gunfire with two to three people who busted into the home after possibly claiming to be police officers.
The men fled in a white four-door vehicle, headed in an unknown direction.
At 5:30 a.m., while deputies were conducting interviews at the original call, they received a report of a body that was found in a cul-de-sac a few miles away, in the 3100 block of West Calle Cisne, Gress said. The man's body had at least one gunshot wound. The body was found near South Cardinal Avenue and West Los Reales Road.
Although investigators can't confirm the two crimes are related, the department is acting as though they are, Gress said.
"This is a very active investigation with a possible homicide," Gress said.
