A 3-year-old boy who was accidentally shot by his 7-year-old cousin Monday remains in the hospital in stable condition.

The child is expected to remain in the hospital for several more days, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman, on Wednesday.

Officers responded to a report of the shooting shortly after 2:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of West Greenleaf Drive.

The neighborhood is in the Midvale Park subdivision, north of West Valencia Road and south of West Drexel Road.

Family members were present in the house when the shooting occurred, said Bay.

She said detectives are still conducting interviews in the case, and the state's Department of Child Safety is working with police in a joint investigation.

Investigators have not released which relatives were in the home at the time, if the boys' parents were present, or who owned the weapon. It also has not been released how the young boy got his hands on the weapon.

A search warrant return shows that among items seized from the house by detectives were marijuana, a gun case, a bullet, a shirt with blood and eight phones. DNA samples from two people were also taken.
