A man struck in a hit-and-run downtown on Friday died from his injuries at Banner-University Medical Center Tucson on Sunday.
The man was identified as Robert Plata, 64, according to a Tucson Police Department Facebook post Monday, April 3.
Shortly before 3 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a crash involving a pedestrian on West Congress Street and North Church Avenue, police said.
Tucson Fire Department paramedics were treating a man, later identified as Plata, in the road about 50 feet west of Church on Congress in front of a Sun Link stop. Paramedics took Plata to the hospital.
Traffic detectives took over the hit-and-run investigation. Witnesses were interviewed and it does not appear that Plata was in a crosswalk when he was struck by an unknown vehicle, police said.
The investigation is continuing and detectives ask that anyone with information call 88-CRIME, an anonymous tipster hotline.
Since January, there have been 16 traffic fatalities in the city, compared to eight at this time last year, according to police data.Β
