A man was shot and killed by South Tucson police early Friday morning and a Pima County Sheriff's deputy on his way to assist was involved in a rollover crash, authorities said.

At about 3:45 a.m., South Tucson police officers responded to a call regarding a man behaving erratically at the Gospel Rescue Mission, 312 W. 28th Street, said Police Chief Michael Ford.

They located the man after he left the Mission and attempted to arrest him, when he became combative, Ford said.

Officers pepper sprayed the man and attempted to subdue him with a taser, but he continued down 29th Street, after which he charged the officers and physically attacked them.

One of the officers discharged his weapon, striking the suspect, Ford said.

The man was transported to Banner University Medical Center, but died several hours later, Ford said.

Police have identified the suspect, but are waiting to notify next of kin before releasing his name.

Shortly after, a Pima County Sheriff's deputy on his way to assist with the investigation into the shooting collided with another vehicle on West 29th Street between South 9th and 10th Avenue, causing the deputy's vehicle to flip over in front of the Valencia Market, Ford said.

The deputy and the occupant of the other vehicle were treated for their injuries and transported to the hospital.

Pima County Sheriff's Department is handling the investigation into the shooting, said Deputy Ryan Inglett.
