NOGALES, Ariz. — Prosecutors have filed federal charges against a Mexican national who was shot and wounded by agents along the U.S. border in Arizona, saying he assaulted federal officers and illegally transported an immigrant into the country.
Authorities say 26-year-old Enrique Serna Acosta, of Nogales, Sonora, struck two U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers with a vehicle on Sept. 8 near the Mariposa Port of Entry.
The Nogales International newspaper in Arizona reports (http://bit.ly/2g4aX1f ) that officers shot at Serna's vehicle, striking him and his 16-year-old passenger, who authorities say was in the U.S. without proper documentation. The juvenile sustained non-life threatening injuries.
A trial for Serna is scheduled to start Jan. 31.
