Tucson police officers detained a man at an east side bank Friday morning, after he claimed to have explosives in the car and refused to exit the vehicle, authorities said.

Shortly before 10 a.m., a man entered the Hughes Federal Credit Union in the area of East Broadway Boulevard and North Pantano Road, and mentioned to people in the bank that he had explosives in his car, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

There was no indication that the man was attempting to rob the bank or that he made threats to anyone, Dugan said.

The man exited the bank and went out to his car, at which point employees called the police, self-evacuated the bank and cleared the parking lot of any bystanders, Dugan said.

A TPD hostage negotiator and the bomb squad arrived, at which point the man was inside of his vehicle and refused to come out.

Shortly before 10:45, the man exited the car and was detained by police.

Bomb squad checked the vehicle and determined there was nothing explosive or hazardous, Dugan said.
