A 28-year-old Tucson woman is facing charges of attempted murder and child abuse, after she attempted to drown her baby but changed her mind and called 911, officials said.
Leina Beckner was booked into the Pima County jail Friday in connection with one count of attempted second-degree murder and one count of child abuse, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.
Shortly before 4:45 p.m., Tucson police and firefighters responded to a home in the 1700 block of East Benson Highway after Beckner called 911 and said that she tried to drown her child, Bay said.
Officers who arrived at the scene saw Beckner holding a crying 9-month-old baby, and quickly took the child and began performing first aid until paramedics arrived and transported the baby to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Child abuse detectives learned that the baby's father ended his relationship with Beckner earlier that day, after which she decided to kill the baby and then herself, Bay said.
Beckner put the child in the bathtub filled with water and tried to drown her before removing her and putting her on the bed. As the baby began to move and struggle to breathe, Beckner began to help her and called 911 to report the incident.
The baby is currently in stable condition.
