A backpack containing two guns found at an elementary school Tuesday was mistakenly brought on campus by a student, officials said.

The backpack was discovered in a hallway of Nash Elementary School, 515 W. Kelso St., said Amy Sharpe, an Amphi School District spokeswoman.

Nash Principal Bob Hehli sent a recorded message to parents, saying that at no time were any of the students in danger.

Hehli said that police were able to determine the registered owner of the guns as a parent of a student who attends the school. The student mistakenly grabbed her father's backpack and was unaware of what was inside.

While it's been determined that the incident was a result of a student's mistake, Hehli said the child will face discipline procedures as outlined by the school's code of conduct concerning bringing weapons onto campus.

"The safety of our students is our number one priority," the principal said.
