A 26-year-old man was shot in the arm by a Pima County Sheriff's deputy, after he opened fire on deputies during a foot pursuit, authorities said.

At about 10:40 a.m., deputies responded to a threats call for a domestic violence-related situation in the in the 4400 block of West Irvington Road, near South Camino de Oeste, said Deputy Cody Gress, a sheriff's department spokesman.

As the two deputies were leaving the home an hour later, they saw the suspect's vehicle in the area and tried to initiate a traffic stop, Gress said.

The suspect failed to stop, and a short pursuit began, as the suspect led deputies westbound on Irvington Road.

The driver turned onto South Sheridan Avenue and drove several miles down the road, before bailing out of his car and running up a hill into the desert area, Gress said.

Deputies chased the suspect, who produced a gun and kept turning back to fire at the deputies as he ran, Gress said.

One of the deputies drew his gun and fired multiple times, hitting the suspect at least once in the arm. The man was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment, Gress said.

Neither of the deputies were injured during the incident, and they'll both be placed on leave pending an investigation, as is protocol in this situation, Gress said.

The names of the suspect and deputies will be released later in the day, Gress said.

This is the first officer-involved shooting in Tucson in 2016.
