A Tucson man was sentenced by a federal judge to nearly six years in prison Monday for child pornography.

Frederick Lassiter, 48, who earlier pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and knowing access of child pornography, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Cindy K. Jorgenson.

After prison, Lassiter will be on supervised release for life with stringent sex offender conditions, including that he must register as a sex offender, states a news release.

On Jan. 13, Lassiter was indicted by a federal grand jury on child pornography offenses. An investigation revealed that Lassiter used an online file sharing program to search for and download child pornography, according to the release.

Lassiter possessed more than 1,000 images and videos of child porn and shared the images with others, authorities said.

This case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to fight the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse via the internet. The initiative was launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice, states the release.

Lassiter's case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Erica L. Seger.
