Looks like we’re having an early monsoon after all.

The air is moist and storms are popping, and while most of the Tucson area had received little or no rainfall as of Saturday, that changed on Sunday for many parts of the city.

A line of thunderstorms moved into the Tucson area from the southeast, soaking areas along the Interstate 10/Interstate 19 corridor, including downtown Tucson, according to the National Weather Service.

Streets and washes around town flooded, causing Tucson Fire Department to respond to at least nine calls for rescues, although none of them were life-threatening, Capt. Barrett Baker said.

Tucson Fire responded to a house fire in the 1700 block of South Avenida Regulo in the 22nd Street and Kolb Road area, which was possibly caused by a lightning strike, Baker said. One person was displaced.

Tucson Electric Power reported power outages to about 3,000 customers along North Campbell Road between Grant Road to just south of East Skyline Drive.

The chances of rain get better across the valley this week, with the National Weather Service predicting a 20 percent chance of rain Monday and Tuesday, with the odds increasing after that, said meteorologist Gary Zell.

β€œWe’ll be in much better flow this Wednesday through Friday. Does that mean its gonna rain at your house or the airport? That’s always a tough call,” Zell said.

On average, the onset of the monsoon in Tucson is July 3.
