Officials are warning community members of a scammer collecting “donations” on behalf of the Tucson Unified School District as recently as last weekend. The scammer claimed the money would pay for vapor intrusion testing at C.E. Rose K-8 School, 710 W. Michigan Dr., in Tucson, AZ.

Officials are warning community members of scammers collecting “donations” on behalf of the Tucson Unified School District.

Multiple individuals from the "Environmental Justice Task Force" were soliciting donations to pay for vapor intrusion testing at C.E. Rose K-8 School as recently as the weekend of February 22, according to a recent press release.

The scammers said the donations would support independent vapor testing by the Dragon Corporation, the release said. Testing does not normally carry a fee and the district was not seeking donations for it when officials first learned of the scam, according to TUSD spokeswoman Leslie Lenhart.

"Tucson Unified wishes to reiterate that any efforts by the 'Environment Justice Task Force' or any other group or individual to collect donations for environmental testing at CE Rose is not associated with the school or the District," Lenhart said.

TUSD originally reported that only a woman from the “Dragon Corporation" was soliciting donations the weekend of February 22.

“Please be aware that this is a SCAM and neither Tucson Unified nor the City of Tucson requires any fee to run the test,” Lenhart wrote in the original release.

Anyone who has given money to the woman should call 911 or go to your local Tucson Police Department substation to file a police report, a TPD spokesman said.

“We are truly sorry if you were approached and impacted,” Lenhart wrote.
