Eastbound Interstate 10 at Avra Valley has reopened after two collisions shut it down.

The first collision happened around 4:33 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

A driver in a Dodge passenger car was driving in the wrong direction and crashed into a pickup truck. The wrong-way driver had minor injuries and was transported to Banner-University Medical Center. The other driver was not injured.

That collision is still under investigation, said Quentin Mehr, DPS spokesman. Impairment has not been ruled out.

A second crash, which happened because of the backup caused from the first crash, happened just after 5 a.m. Public safety officers received notification of the crash while investigating the first crash, according to Northwest Fire.

A truck driver came to a stop and a passenger vehicle, which had a female driver and a child in it, failed to stop behind it and ran into it, Mehr said. The passenger car went partially underneath the truck.

The female driver had to be extricated and was transported to the hospital. She is in serious but stable condition, he said. The child passenger was not injured but was taken to the hospital for observation.

It took firefighters over an hour to get the female driver out of the vehicle, as the vehicle had been significantly damaged, Northwest Fire said.

Fatigue may have played a factor in the crash, according to Mehr.
