Foothills student reaches Shakespeare semifinals
Miriam Arden, 16, a junior at Catalina Foothills High School, has made it to the semifinals of the National Shakespeare Competition in New York’s Lincoln Center.
Arden, a student in Carson Wright’s drama program at Foothills, surpassed many of the 55 entries to place high in the semis.
The all-expenses-paid trip to New York was sponsored by the Tucson Branch of the English-Speaking Union, an organization working for education through understanding of Shakespeare’s works.
This marked the 33rd annual competition for the Tucson branch, which works with the University of Arizona’s Shakespeare in the Schools program. The local competition featured 23 high schools across Southern Arizona.
Each school had an in-house competition to determine its winner, who represented them in the regional competition in March.
Flowing Wells automotive program earns certification
The automotive program at Flowing Wells High School has earned its third recertification of the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) program standards. Flowing Wells is one of three high schools in Arizona with current NATEF certification, and the only one in Southern Arizona.
NATEF is the educational program division of the national Automotive Service Excellence association, which certifies automotive technicians throughout the nation.
Rotary Club lauds six
for being role models
The Kino Rotary Club of South Tucson has honored six local high school students with Character Awards.
The club established the awards in 2011 to honor high school students who serve as role models in their schools and community via service.
The awardees were Clara Lopez, Star Academy High School; Dean Friskey, Desert View High School; Citlali Galindo, Sunnyside High School; Clayton Pancho, Baboquivari High School; Liam Membrila, Pueblo High School; and Brandi “Sarrae” Barron, PPEP Tec High School’s Celestino Fernandez Learning Center.
College Academy for Parents celebrates 15th anniversary
In partnership with the Sunnyside Unified School District, the College Academy for Parents has celebrated its “quinceañera.”
District Superintendent Steve Holmes, University of Arizona President Robert Robbins and other guests addressed this year’s graduating class of parents. Since its inception, the program says it has supported more than 1,100 families and 2,600 K-6 students in the district.

adds new board members
The Sunnyside Foundation has announced new board members: Michael Barton, vice president of HDR; Celyna Cervantes, vice president of branch administration at Pima Federal Credit Union; and Eugenia Favela, assistant superintendent at the Sunnyside Unified School District.
