Two elementary schools can win learning gardens

Two local elementary schools have a chance to win a learning garden courtesy of Bashas’ Family Stores, the Captain Planet Foundation and Dole Packaged Foods LLC. Applications are available to nominate an elementary school at captainplanetfoundation.org/bashascontest online.

The Captain Planet Foundation Learning Gardens come with lesson kits, a fully equipped garden cooking cart and supplies to establish a schoolyard garden. The package is valued at $2,500.

The learning garden program provides a context for multidisciplinary learning, ranging from nutrition and science to social studies, math and language arts. Students benefit by expanding their palates, taste-testing healthy foods and learning about food origins, according to the foundation.

Tucson Country Day celebrating 50 years

Tucson Country Day School is kicking off its 50th school year with a red-carpet welcome for preschool through eighth-grade students on Monday, Aug. 7.

The school plans to roll out a red-carpet walkway from the parking lot sidewalk, through the school’s gate and into the campus, as teachers and staff line the sides — cheering, clapping and giving high-fives to students.

Richard Cooper, the charter school’s owner, purchased land for the campus in 1968 and opened the school as a preschool and prekindergarten shortly after. He added grade levels, and what began with 30 students and five staff members has expanded to more than 800 students and 106 staff members.

Additional events will take place throughout the school year. The school is at 9239 E. Wrights-town Road.

Pima Federal Credit Union raises $55K for teachers

Pima Federal Credit Union raised $55,000 through it’s annual golf tournament to help supply local teachers with back-to-school supplies.

The money was donated to Tucson Values Teachers, a local organization that runs a donation drive for teachers.

Teachers can register through the Tucson Values Teachers website to receive a $50 gift card to purchase the tools they need for classroom and student success.
