Amphitheater schools have a new leader.
The district’s governing board voted 5-0 Tuesday to hire Todd Jaeger, who currently works as general counsel for the Tucson Unified School District, as the superintendent. Amphitheater has 21 schools and serves more than 14,000 students.
Jaeger will replace Patrick Nelson, who is retiring at the end of the school year.
Jaeger will earn a base salary of $172,000 next school year. That will increase to $179,000 by the 2020 school year, which is the last of his three-year contract.
Nelson, the outgoing Amphi superintendent, was paid a base salary of $165,441 this school year. As TUSD’s general counsel, Jaeger is paid a base salary of $151,000.
Jaeger worked for Amphi for 20 years, most recently as its general counsel and associate to the superintendent, prior to joining TUSD for a year as its general counsel. He previously told the Star he looked forward to returning to his home district.
“I’m a creature of and believer in Amphi. The notion of getting back there is really something that is encouraging and positive to me,” he said.
With Jaeger’s departure, TUSD will now have to search for a permanent superintendent, deputy superintendent, chief human resources officer and a general counsel.
