Five Tucson-area teens have been named semifinalists for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
The program was established to recognize and honor some of the nationβs most-distinguished graduating high school seniors.
The semifinalists are Natalie Ezeugwu and Steven D. Fried of University High School, Remington E. Knauer and Courtney E. Barger of Vail Academy and High School, and Diviya A. Rajesh of Basis Tucson North.
The winners of the contest will be named in May and will receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in June.
Kino School senior gets national recognition
Diego Huerta, a senior at Kino School, has been recognized by the National Hispanic Recognition Program.
Huerta was awarded a National Merit Scholarship of $18,000 per year for four years. He will take part in the honors program at the University of Arizona in the fall.

foundationβs A+ honor
Three Tucson-area schools have been named A+ Schools of Excellence.
The honor, from the Arizona Educational Foundation, honors exemplary Pre-K through 12th-grade public schools that meet the needs of students and achieve overall success.
The schools are:
- Corona Foothills Middle School of the Vail Unified School District.
- Flowing Wells Jr. High School of the Flowing Wells Unified School District.
- Sahuarita High School of the Sahuarita Unified School District.
Each will receive $500 and a banner designating them as an A+ School of Excellence. All staff and faculty at the award-winning schools will also be eligible for partial scholarships from Argosy University Phoenix.
Schools were evaluated in the areas of student focus and support, school culture, active teaching and learning, curriculum, leadership, community and parent involvement and assessment data.
Kindergarten enrolling in Tanque Verde district
Parents interested in enrolling students for kindergarten in the Tanque Verde School District next year are encouraged to sign up now.
Registration for the 2016-2017 school year is open, and kindergarten roundup events are being hosted at Agua Caliente Elementary on Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and at Tanque Verde Elementary on May 11 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Academy of Tucson hosts open houses
The Academy of Tucson Schools will be hosting open houses at all three campuses on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m.
The Academy of Tucson Elementary School serves grades K-4 and is located at 9209 E. Wrightstown Road.
The Academy of Tucson Middle School serves grades 5-8 and is located at 7310 E. 22nd St.
The Academy of Tucson High School serves grades 9-12 and is located at 10720 E. 22nd St.
Tucson Country Day holds family night
Tucson Country Day School is hosting a night of family activities on May 7.
The event, Go Live!, is free and open to the public and runs from 4 to 7 p.m.
In addition to food, games and activities, there will be student performance and an artwork showcase.
Attendees will also learn about what students are doing in specialty classes at the charter school, 9239 E. Wrightstown Road.
