Five S. Arizona seniors get Flinn Scholarships

Five area students, considered to … be among the highest-achieving high school seniors in the state, will be awarded a scholarship valued at more than $115,000, which includes the cost of tuition to one of Arizona’s three universities, room and board, funding for international-study-related travel and professional development, support for an off-campus internship, university faculty mentorship and more.

Twenty-one Flinn Scholars were selected from 760 applications. The Southern Arizona winners are: Eric Arellano of Catalina Foothills High School, Craig Johnson of Tucson High Magnet School, Ruby Kerwin of University High School, Arlinne Rodriguez of Nogales High School and Benjamin Trumpinski of Cienega High School.

St. Ambrose to host
family literacy night

St. Ambrose Catholic School is hosting a free family literacy night Wednesday.

Children are encouraged to dress as their favorite literary characters and will go home with a book.

The event, which is open to the public, starts at 6 p.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic School, 300 S. Tucson Blvd.

9 area students win corporate Merit awards

Nine Tucson-area students have been named winners of corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards.

Corporate sponsors provide scholarships for National Merit finalists who are children of their employees, are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wants to encourage.

Most of the awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends that range from $500 to $10,000 per year. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000.

Hebrew Academy
to host STEM festival

The Tucson Hebrew Academy will host a free community STEM festival Sunday.

The event aims to bring together families with an interest in science, technology, engineering and math for hands-on demonstrations and experiments, live animal shows and more.

The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tucson Hebrew Academy, 3888 E. River Road.

Country Day School
to host β€˜Go Live’ event

Student achievements, including artwork and performances, will be on display Saturday at Tucson Country Day School.

The free event, dubbed β€œGo Live,” runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on the campus, 9239 E. Wrightstown Road. It is open to the public.

Families are invited to partake in food, games and activities while checking out what students are doing in specialty classes and extracurricular activities such as music, art, technology, Spanish, athletics, drama club, garden club and more.

Pueblo High graduate
named Truman Scholar

Pueblo Magnet High School alum Bill De La Rosa has been named a 2015 Truman Scholar.

De La Rosa is one of 58 college students honored based on academic success, leadership accomplishments and their likelihood of becoming public-service leaders.

Each of the students will receive up to $30,000 for graduate study, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling and special internship opportunities within the federal government.

The 2012 Pueblo graduate now attends Bowdoin College in Maine. He is a sociology and Latin American studies double major planning to pursue a Ph.D. in sociology with an emphasis on migration.
