University of Arizona Vice President Edith Auslander, a former member of the Arizona Board of Regents, is resigning.

Her resignation was announced Monday in an e-mail message from UA President Robert Shelton to all UA employees.

The memo said Auslander's resignation would be effective at the end of the university's fiscal year, which is June 30, and announced a search for a vice president and chief of staff. It said the search would be internal and called for nominations.

"Edie has been instrumental in advancing our diversity mission and has provided unwavering support in the best interest of women, students and minorities," Shelton said in the memo.

A native Tucsonan, Auslander was named Woman of the Year by the Tucson Chamber of Commerce in 1986.

Auslander, 68, is a former Arizona Daily Star reporter and copy editor, and later was personnel director for Tucson Newspapers Inc.

She could not be reached for comment Monday.
