College Prep Academy students raise $700

Fifteen high school students from the Arizona College Prep Academy have raised $700 to donate to a local cause.

The fundraising was part of a philanthropy project with the Southern Arizona Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The students also got to learn about philanthropy, fundraising and charity.

The students decided to focus on decreasing the stigma associated with mental illness.

The money they raised went to the Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services postpartum depression program.

50 teams to compete in Wilson Lego meet

Wilson K-8 School in Oro Valley is hosting a Lego League Tucson regional tournament on Dec. 3.

About 50 Southern Arizona teams will compete at the school’s campus, 2330 W. Glover Road, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year’s challenge is called, β€œAnimal Allies,” and competitors are charged with using their scientific skills to help animals.

Six get Rotary character awards

Six high school students have been given character awards by the Kino Rotary Club of South Tucson.

They are:

  • Jennifer Pelayo Garcia, STAR Academic Center.
  • Noor Mohamed, Desert View High School.
  • Patrick Robles, Sunnyside High School.
  • Cyndi Lewis, Baboquivari High School.
  • Daniel Escobar, Pueblo Magnet High School.
  • Sierra Flint, PPEP TEC High School.

The awardees were each given a certificate of recognition and a $25 gift card. The rotary club will also donate $25 to a charity of each student’s choosing.

The club established the character awards program in 2011 to honor local high school students who are role models in their schools and communities.

Foothills speech team admitted to elite club

The Catalina Foothills High School speech and debate team has been admitted into the National Speech and Debate Association’s elite 100 Club.

The team, led by mentors Angela Hill and Taylor Johnson, had to earn enough points for the membership.

It had a strong showing at the 25th Mountain View Speech and Debate Tournament, where several students won individual medals.
