Canyon del Oro High Schoolโs orchestra students performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City last Monday.
CDO students were selected last May to perform there. They raised $75,000 for the trip.
While they were in New York, the students also got to see the Broadway musical, โChicago.โ They also met with a CDO alumnus, Adam Boyles, who is a professor of orchestra at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
United Way honors two Tucson educators
Two Tucson-area educators have been honored by United Way for their contributions to literacy.
Caroline Carson and Curtis Kiwak of the Tucson Unified School District were named literacy champions at the 12th annual Business Leaders for Early Education breakfast.
Carson works with the Five Star Quality First Preschool program at TUSD. She has a masterโs degree in early childhood education from Bank Street College in New York.
Kiwak, who has worked as a camp director, certified curriculum trainer and co-owner of a private preschool, oversees a state-funded preschool program for the district.
Three TUSD magnet schools recognized
Three TUSD magnet schools have been nationally recognized.
Borton, Mansfeld and Dodge magnet schools were given awards by Magnet Schools of America, a national association of magnet and theme-based schools.
Borton, which has project-based learning, received the Magnet Schools of America School of Excellence Award. Mansfeld, which has a science, technology, engineering and math focus, and Dodge, which has a traditional focus, were named schools of distinction.
