A senior at Mountain View High School in the Marana Unified School District has been named as a High School Student Athletic Training Aide of the Year by the Arizona Athletic Trainers’ Association.

Shea Oliver was the recipient of the Lanny Williams Award, which comes with a $500 scholarship. She is one of three students in Arizona to be chosen.

The award is given to high school athletic training students with at least two years of experience who show good work ethic, character, leadership, academic performance and competency as an athletic training aide.

Dental program holds open house in Marana

The Marana Unified School District will host an open house for its dental assisting program.

Parents and students can come to the Marana Health Center, 13395 N. Marana Main Street, on Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to learn about the program.

The dental assisting program is two-year course funded by the Pima County Joint Technical Education District.

Marana kindergarten registration underway

Kindergarten registration for the 2016-2017 school year has begun at the Marana Unified School District.

Marana offers full-day kindergarten programs at no cost to parents.

Children who will be 5 years old before Sept. 1, 2016, can register. Registration forms can be picked up from any Marana elementary school or online at www.maranausd.org

Sunnyside to hold school, reading events

The Sunnyside Unified School District has announced two upcoming events.

They are:

  • Countdown to kindergarten on Wednesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Los Amigos Elementary School, 2200 E. Drexel Road, where families with children who will be enrolling in kindergarten for the 2016-2017 school year can talk to district employees and principals.

There will be free pizza and prizes from local businesses, such as the International Wildlife Museum, Arizona Air Time Jump Center, the Reid Park Zoo, Children’s Museum Tucson and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.

  • Big Reads Connects Sunnyside, a partnership between the district and Literacy Connects, will be held on Feb. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Apollo Middle School, 265 W. Nebraska St. There will be local literacy resources, including the Pima County Public Library, YMCA and Read to a Dog by Pet Partners. There will also be a Reader’s Theater and student performances throughout the event. The event is free and open to the public.

Vail job fair seeking teachers, support staff

The Vail School District will host a job fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Desert Sky Middle School, 9850 E. Rankin Loop, in Rita Ranch.

The district is recruiting teachers for all grades and subjects, support staff and special-education teachers.

Nonviolence center holding open house

An open house is being held Monday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the Nonviolence Resource Center.

The center is housed at Tucson Youth Development’s ACE Charter High School, 1929 N. Stone Ave.

Those in attendance will get to see the space and obtain information about current and upcoming youth leadership and nonviolence training classes.

ACE Charter High School is home to a Kingian Nonviolence Community Leadership class, which teaches methods for problem-solving and communicating effectively.

The Resource Center contains reference and curriculum material about Kingian Nonviolence, the civil-rights movement and other peace programs in Tucson.

Tucson Country Day starts open enrollment

Open enrollment for Tucson Country Day School begins Monday, Feb. 1, for kindergarten through eighth grade.
