Search for TUSD's next leader is officially on

Tucson’s largest school district is officially starting the search for a permanent superintendent.

Tucson Unified School District’s Governing Board chose the Arizona School Boards Association to help find someone for the top administrator job.

Currently, Gabriel Trujillo, an assistant superintendent with the district, occupies that position on an interim basis. The position became vacant after Feb. 18, when H.T. Sanchez resigned after a weeks-long effort from some of the board members to oust him.

ASBA will be paid $800 per day for up to 10 days for its consulting services, which include providing feedback to the TUSD board, screening applications and contacting the applicants’ references. Background checks for each candidate will cost an additional $175 per person.

3 Southern AZ seniors named Flinn Scholars

Three Southern Arizona high school seniors have been awarded the 2017 Flinn Scholarship.

The scholarships, valued at more than $115,000, went to Zcheecid Aguirre of Desert View High School in the Sunnyside Unified School District, Maria Galloway-Sprietsma of Benson High School in the Benson Unified School District, and Stanley Wong of University High School in TUSD.

The Flinn Scholarship, supported by the Phoenix-based Flinn Foundation and the state’s universities, covers the cost of tuition and room and board at one of the state’s three public universities, provides funding for at least two study-abroad experiences, an off-campus internship and other benefits.

The typical Flinn Scholar achieves at least a 3.5 grade-point average, a top 5 percent class rank, a score of 1360 on the SAT or 29 on the ACT, and participation and demonstrated leadership in extracurricular activities.

More than 750 applications were received from high school seniors for this year’s Flinn program.

Catalina Foothills High School won the 2017 AZ State Chess Team Championship, held April 22-23 in Flagstaff.

CFHS senior Emma Wing was named the 2017 U.S. Chess National Girls Tournament of Champions representative for Arizona.
