The Tucson Unified School District will seek voter approval in November to dispose of 10 schools that were recently closed.
On Tuesday, the Governing Board unanimously agreed to place the campuses on the ballot as state law requires that sales, leases or exchanges of district-owned real property be done only with voter approval. The measure doesn’t require that the property be sold; rather, it gives the district the option to sell in the future should it choose to.
The cost of the election is approximately $235,000.
The sites, which ceased operations last school year, would include: Hohokam Middle School, Carson Middle School, Schumaker Elementary School, Fort Lowell-Townsend K-8, Corbett Elementary School, Lyons Elementary School, Howenstine High School, Brichta Elementary School, Menlo Park Elementary and Wakefield Middle School.
TUSD went through a similar process in 2010 when it successfully put 80 properties on the ballot including vacant pieces of land, warehouses, campuses and district headquarters.
The proceeds of any sale, lease or exchange can be used to pay off bonds, improve existing schools, purchase school sites or reduce taxes.
