Fire crews conduct burnout operations on the Mule Ridge Fire west of Nogales on Thursday.

A fire burning west of Nogales has grown to 7,700 acres, but is about 30 percent contained, officials said Friday.

The Mule Ridge Fire is burning oak grassland and brush on the north end of the Pajarito Wilderness and other national forest lands southeast of Arivaca. The fire is burning near the historic mining town of Ruby.

About 150 people are assigned to the fire along with four helicopters.

The fire was quite active on the southwest side, according to an update by the Coronado National Forest.

Overnight, fire crews worked to eliminate the wildfires growth to the north and east. Crews worked to stop the fire's movement toward Bear Valley Ranch.

The great increase in acreage burned is partially due to burnout operations conducted by fire crews, according to officials.

The heat has been an issue, as five firefighters suffered heat-related injuries while working.
