Significant progress had been made in fighting the green waste landfill fire near Drexel and Houghton, according to a news release from Tucson Fire Department.Β

But the area burning, about the size of two football fields with debris piles 8 to 10 feet deep, is still susceptible to flare ups as the wind shifts, the release said.Β

The fire is burning in tunnels running through the debris that firefighters cannot reach. Heavy equipment was coming in Monday, January 1, to turn up and expose any hidden areas, the release said.Β

The smoke has decreased from Sunday, the release said. Firefighters hope to have it out completely by Tuesday.Β
