J.R. Kelley of Park Tucson installs meters along North Fourth Avenue. Drivers can pay via smartphone app, debit or credit card, online or by phone.

For the first time, it’ll cost a little coin to park in the Fourth Avenue entertainment district.

Parking meters were installed this week.

Here’s what you need to know.

1 There are about 380 new parking meters in the Fourth Avenue area, including 153 meters on Fourth between Second and Ninth streets and more on side streets.

2 It’ll cost $1 per hour to park, but that’s only between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays. Nights and weekends are still free. You can pay with coins, cash or cards.

3 There are three ways to pay using your mobile phone.

  • Use an app. Search for the GoTucson app on your smartphone and download it. You can use it to pay for a meter each time or pre-load a set amount and draw down the balance over time. The app will text you a reminder if your meter is going to expire, and you can add more time to the meter, right up to the 2- or 3-hour limit. The app adds a 25-cent fee for each transaction.
  • If you don’t want to download the app, you can go to a mobile website, gotucsonapp.com.
  • If you don’t have a smartphone, you can call (520) 441-3752 to pay by following automated prompts.
