A selection process to replace Adelita Grijalva’s District 5 seat on the Pima County Board of Supervisors has been set.
Grijalva announced Monday that she will be running for the Tucson congressional seat held by her late father Raúl Grijalva. She resigned the same day.
The selection process supervisors unanimously approved Tuesday will begin Wednesday, April 2, and will last until Monday, April 7.
The board agreed to review all applications at its April 15 meeting, when they intend to vote on Grijalva’s replacement.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, live in District 5 and be a registered Democrat. The following is also required: a letter of interest, a résumé, a financial disclosure statement and a conflict of interest affidavit.
The county will also conduct background checks on all applicants.
The board also requested the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson hold a public forum for all candidates next week.
Whoever supervisors appoint to fill Grijalva’s seat will hold the post through Dec. 31, 2026. A special election will be held that year, and the candidate who wins will serve out the remainder of Grijalva’s original term through 2028.
Grijalva earlier this year became the board’s vice chair. She also serves as Pima County’s representative on the Pima Association of Governments Regional Council and is “2nd Vice Chair” on the Regional Transportation Authority Board. Supervisors will also have to appoint another representative to those bodies.
