Democrat Brian Johnson set to be Pima County's next treasurer

Democrat Brian Johnson is set to be Pima County’s next treasurer, unofficial election results Wednesday show.

Johnson lead Republican incumbent Chris Ackerley 57% to 43%, according to results from the Pima County Elections Department via the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office’s results page.

The treasurer’s office is responsible for collecting taxes and maintaining financial records for Pima County.

The office had been led by Beth Ford for nearly 24 years until her resignation in April. Ackerley was appointed by the Board of Supervisors shortly after Ford’s resignation .

But come Jan. 1, Johnson will likely take the helm for a four-year term.

Johnson told the Star Wednesday that he was “fairly confident” coming into Tuesday night because “I think I did fairly well in reaching out to a broader base, and explaining to people that I do have experience in county government, and I do have ideas that are going to improve things for not only the taxpayers, but also to help the community.”

Johnson has worked in finance and risk management for five years and in the Assessor’s Office for nine years. He also represented the area on the Arizona State Board of Equalization.

His win adds to a big Democratic showing in local races: Pima County Attorney Laura Conover and Recorder Gabriella Cãzares-Kelly won their re-election bids. Sheriff Chris Nanos has maintained his lead over Republican challenger Heather Lappin, while all three incumbent Democrats on the Board of Supervisors won their posts and District 3 elected another Democrat in Jennifer “Jen” Allen.
