Arizona Senate candidate John McLean was struck and killed in a crash early Friday on Tucsonโ€™s east side, police say.

McLean, the Democratic challenger for Tucson-area District 17โ€™s senate seat, was driving east on Broadway near North Houghton Road about 6 a.m. when Tucson police say he was struck by an impaired driver who ran a stop sign.

McLean, 68, was pronounced dead at the crash scene, Tucson police said in a news release.

McLean, a Democrat, faced Republican Venden โ€œVinceโ€ Leach in the race for Tucson area District 17 in this weekโ€™s election.

โ€œJohn was a good man who conducted himself honorably as a candidate. My deepest condolences go out to Johnโ€™s family and friends in this most difficult time,โ€ Leach told the Star. โ€œThe lives John positively touched during his life are incalculable, and we should all be so fortunate to do the same.โ€

In the wreck, investigators say McLean was driving a 2019 Toyota Rav4 east on Broadway when the driver of a 2018 Ford Explorer headed north on North Ridgeside Drive ran a stop sign and hit the passenger side of McLeanโ€™s vehicle, the release said.

The driver of the Ford, Michael Martin Creel, 27, was not injured in the crash.

Creel was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and aggravated DUI charges, the release said.

Creel has been booked into the Pima County jail, police said.

A third-generation Arizonan, McLean was born in Phoenix. He earned a bachelorโ€™s degree from the University of Arizona in 1975 and a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology five years later, according to a candidate survey he completed to Ballotpedia earlier this year.

McLean made his name in Tucson by opening an office of Arete Associates, an engineering and science company, which he told the Star told the Arizona Daily Star in October employs over 75 people and generates more than $30 million in annual revenue.

The overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022, prompted him to run for office, McLean told the Star.

As of Friday afternoon Leach led McLean the race for the District 17 Senate seat by 3,052 votes, a margin of about 2%, according to the Secretary of Stateโ€™s Officeโ€™s unofficial results page.

Joshua Polacheck, who ran for the Arizona Corporation Commission this year, was one of the local Democratic candidates who campaigned in October with Jane Fonda.

McLean โ€œwas dedicated to making the life of people in southern Arizona better,โ€ Polachek said.

โ€œHe was a tireless advocate for the people, the working people and the environment of southern Arizona,โ€ Polacheck continued. โ€œWe lost someone who is a dedicated public servant, and my condolences go out to his family.

Pima County Supervisor-elect Jen Allen, who also spent time with Fonda, called news of the crash devastating.

โ€œMy heart goes out to his family. We lost a real brave and passionate soul this morning,โ€ Allen told the Star. โ€œHeโ€™s incredibly committed to public service, serving our community, and thatโ€™s going to be โˆ’ itโ€™s just a huge loss, and itโ€™s so shocking.โ€

Pima County Supervisor Rex Scott said in a post he was โ€œheartbroken to learn that we have lost this good and decent public servant.โ€

โ€œOur family sends its love and prayers to Johnโ€™s family and friends. Few candidates for public office could match his commitment to the people he sought to represent,โ€ Scott said.

The Arizona Senate Democratic Caucus said in a post on X that โ€œWe are heartbroken to hearโ€ of McLeanโ€™s passing.

โ€œHe spent his final days fighting for a better Arizona and we could not be more thankful for his work and dedication to our great state,โ€ the post reads.

LD21 Sen. Rosanna Gabaldon said in a post that in the few times she met McLean, โ€œI came to appreciate his quiet wisdom and understated humility.โ€

State Rep. for District 21 Consuelo Hernandez said in a post she was heartbroken to hear of McLeanโ€™s passing.

โ€œI had the honor of getting to meet John through his campaign. He was filled with so much hope for our future, positive, sharp,โ€ she said. โ€œHe was one of the few people who made it a point to greet every volunteer, learn their names and thank every person. What a loss. My condolences to his family.โ€

State Rep. Alma Hernandez said on X that McLean was โ€œone of the nicest humansโ€ she has ever met.

โ€œMay his memory forever be a blessing,โ€ she said. โ€œMy heart is with his family and all the lives he touched.โ€

โ€œIn the short time since Iโ€™ve known him, itโ€™s been clear John was a good man, cheerfully willing to work hard on a difficult campaign, and motivated by a desire to make Arizona better for all of us,โ€ said State Senator Priya Sundareshan, who represents Tucson-area District 18, said in a post.
