Federal funding will be used for a program that helps low-income homeowners in Pima County cover the cost of some home repairs and weatherizing.

Nearly $735,000 in federal funds will be used for a program that helps low-income homeowners in Pima County cover the cost of some home repairs and weatherizing.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors this week unanimously approved three federal grants from the Arizona Department of Housing that provide additional funding for home energy efficiency measures and health and safety installation and repairs for homeowners who qualify, the county said in a news release.

The additional funding for the Pima County Home Repair Program will help homeowners with repairs linked to health, safety and energy efficiency.

The grants account for $168,620 from the U.S. Department of Energyโ€™s Weatherization Assistance Program and $566,252 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Servicesโ€™s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, the county said.

โ€œBy providing low-income community members with assistance in making necessary home repairs, this funding reduces household costs and improves the health and safety of existing housing stock in the County,โ€ Dan Sullivan, director of the Pima County Community & Workforce Development Department, said in the release.

Weatherizing can help make a home safer and more energy-efficient, saving residents on heating and cooling costs.

The grant funding also covers home repairs that might be necessary to make a home safer, with repairs to roofs, walls, plumbing or electrical systems, the release said.

Low-income, owner-occupied households in Pima County that are outside the Tucson city limits can qualify.

Priority will be given to the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and families with children who are 5 years old or younger, the county said.

Sullivan said the funding is tied to the goals of the โ€œProsperity Initiative,โ€ a wide-ranging set of anti-poverty policies adopted by the county in 2023.

Increasing housing stability for lower-income families is among the goals of the initiative.
