Afternoon traffic travels Friday on Tucson’s 22nd Street Bridge over the Union Pacific rail line and the Barraza-Aviation Parkway. The city is holding a series of public meetings this month about the 22nd Street Bridge Revitalization Project, which would replace the current bridge and increase the number of traffic lanes.

Tucsonans can have a say in two major proposed transportation projects throughout this month.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is beginning the second study phase for a proposed new freeway in Pima County.

The proposed Sonoran Corridor, what would be known as State Route 410, would connect Interstate-19 and Interstate-10 south of Tucson International Airport, the department says in a news release.

ADOT estimates this would improve travel times by more than 16 minutes and reduce traffic congestion by about 12%.

Tucsonans can give their input in a survey to identify and evaluate engineering and environmental concerns, and complete a mapping exercise to help determine interchange locations and condition change concerns. The survey is open through Sept. 1. Visit sonorancorridor.com for more information.

Meanwhile, Tucsonans can also attend three meetings in the next two weeks to learn more about the 22nd Street Bridge Revitalization Project.

The Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility project will “replace the existing weight restricted bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad and increase the number of travel lanes in each direction for improved east-west connectivity,” says a news release.

In August 2022, The City of Tucson was awarded a federal grant of $25 million through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity program to fund the construction of the bridge, which will run between Kino Parkway and Tucson Boulevard.

The project team will share updates at the following meetings:

  • Wednesday, Aug. 7: From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Robison Elementary School, 2745 E. 18th St.
  • Thursday, Aug. 8: From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. during a virtual meeting (
