This image released by staff for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords shows staffer Ron Barber meeting with staff volunteer Daniel Hernandez Sunday at UMC. Hernandez, who started his internship for Giffords five days prior to Saturday's shooting, is credited with helping save the life of the congresswoman.

Ron Barber, who is the Tucson District Director for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, is recovering from wounds received in the shooting Saturday that killed six people and injured 14 others. He was shot two times and has undergone two surgeries.

Barber, 65, visited with Daniel Hernandez in his ICU room on Sunday. Hernandez is an intern in Giffords’ Tucson office and was at the Saturday morning event. When the shooting started Hernandez ran to help Giffords and asked another bystander to apply pressure to Barber’s injuries.

While he propped up Giffords and kept pressure on her head wound, Hernandez also made sure that Barber’s wife, Nancy, was contacted immediately. He asked Barber for the phone number and directed another person to place the call.

Barber is “extremely grateful and impressed with Hernandez’s composure under the circumstances and had been asking to see him after he had gained strength following surgery,” according to a statement from the family. He has been able to visit with his four grandchildren.

Giffords’s spokesman C.J. Karamargin describes Barber’s medical condition as “good, very good.”
