How Pima County justice of the peace and constable races shape up

All but one race for five open Pima County justice of the peace jobs will have a competitive primary this August.

By comparison, races for eight constable positions will be a little less eventful, with just two featuring a competitive primary. Those two constable races, for Precincts 4 and 7, are also the only ones with more than one candidate running.

Maria Felix of Precinct 9 is the only candidate running for re-election in the justice of the peace race, whereas six constable incumbents are, five of them in uncontested races. Patrick Moran is the sitting Precinct 2 justice of the peace but was appointed to the position in August.

Here are the constable and JP races that have competitive primaries Aug. 30, along with the names of candidates and their party affiliation. In the online version of this story, you can click on a candidate’s name to go to their campaign Facebook page or website if they have one.

Precinct 4 Democratic primary

The winner of the primary will face Green Party candidate Beryl Baker in the general election, which will decide who replaces the precinct’s current constable, Jim Driscoll, who is running for Precinct 4 justice of the peace.

Precinct 7 Republican primary

R.C. Brown

Thomas Schenek

Incumbent R.C. Brown faces Thomas Schenek in this competitive Republican primary. There are no other candidates for the office, so the primary winner will have no competitor on the November ballot.

This three-way primary race features all of the candidates running for the position, meaning the winner will have no competitor on the November ballot. Patrick Moran was appointed to this position last August, replacing retiring Justice of the Peace José Luis Castillo, who served for 20 years.

The three Democratic contenders are vying to replace Justice of the Peace Carmen Dolny, who is not seeking re-election. There are no candidates from other parties for the position.

These two Democratic contenders are hoping to replace retiring Justice of the Peace Paul Simon. There are no contenders from other parties.

Precinct 10 Republican primary

Vince Roberts

Newman and Roberts are running to fill the seat of Justice of the Peace Jack Peyton, who is not seeking re-election. There are no other candidates in the race.

The primary election is Aug. 30. Early voting begins Aug. 3.
