Campaign signs showing up in medians and street corners this week that feature a bright orange cartoonish face of Donald Trump are paid for by the areaβs highest ranking Democrat.
With no organized opposition this election cycle, U.S. Rep. RaΓΊl Grijalva first threw his weight behind Bernie Sanders and now is helping Hillary Clinton by running the Dump Trump campaign using small signs that depict the otherwise orange Trump with white-circles around his eyes, a swoosh of yellow hair, and an open mouth.
βItβs a caricature, but itβs close to reality,β Grijalva said Tuesday.
An animated video version on Grijalvaβs Facebook page shows the cartoon Trump waddling around a stage with cash coming out of his pockets and his face morphs into that of a sad clown.
A Chicano slang version of the posters spotted on the cityβs west side says: βChale Con Trump.β That translates loosely to βno wayβ with Trump.
The signs are meant to get a laugh, but theyβre also to remind people thereβs an important election going on and they should vote and βdonβt sit back and watch,β Grijalva said.
A candidate who ridicules, threatens, and makes misogynist and racist comments is dangerous, Grijalva said. A Trump presidency would βmarginalize many communities and tilt our idea of public service in a dangerous direction.β
Grijlava said heβs spent about $1,500 of his campaign money on the signs and might buy another set because some of the signs apparently have ended up in peopleβs living rooms as keepsakes.
