Incumbent LaWall ahead in race for Pima County attorney

Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall maintained a strong lead in the Democratic primary over challenger Joel Feinman throughout Tuesday night, but the results were still too close to call as of deadline.

LaWall faced an aggressive campaign from the former public defender and said early on that she wouldn’t debate her challenger.

The winner faces Green Party candidate Cyndi Tuell in the Nov. 8 general election.

During his campaign, Feinman took the position that LaWall puts too many nonviolent offenders in prison, as opposed to offering diversionary programs. He also has implied that she’s soft on crime, choosing to prosecute drug offenders over cases such as sexual assault.

LaWall defended her record, arguing that data support that the right people are going to prison and that more than 90 percent of the people in Arizona prisons are violent or repeat offenders.

Napier takes big lead

in GOP sheriff’s race

In the Republican primary for Pima County sheriff, early results showed Mark Napier with nearly twice the number of votes of Terry Staten, a sheriff’s sergeant.

Should he win, Napier, a retired Tucson police officer, will face Sheriff Chris Nanos, a Democrat who ran unopposed in the primary, in the general election.

During their campaigns, both Republican candidates discussed “cronyism” in the department, saying Nanos exercises favoritism by hiring retired employees into newly created and high-paying positions.

Early results showed Dustin Williams taking the lead over Michael Gordy .Should Williams, a Democrat, maintain the lead, he will face Republican Margaret Burk- holder in November.

Democrat incumbent Bill Staples was leading Brian Johnson by nearly a 2-to-1 margin. There is no Republican in the general election, but there is an independent candidate.
