Tucson police detectives are investigating a homicide that took place near West Ajo Way and South Sixth Avenue early Sunday.

Officers responded to a report of a possible shooting at South Seventh Avenue and West Lincoln Street shortly after 1 a.m.

Upon arrival, they found 38-year-old Israel Dominguez Alfaro in the roadway with signs of gunshot trauma, according to a news release.

Alfaro was taken to Banner - University Medical Center Tucson, where he died shortly after arrival, the release said.

Detectives determined that Alfaro had been involved in a physical altercation earlier in the evening with 29-year-old Alice Puente.

Alfaro and his brother were walking in the area of Seventhth Avenue and Lincoln Street several hours later when Puente and several male suspects, one with a baseball bat, pulled up in a blue SUV and confronted the two, the release said.

A fight ensued and at some point, one of the suspects fired a gun, striking Alfaro, according to the release. Puente and the others fled in the SUV, police said.

Detectives found Puente and took her into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder and kidnapping. They continue to look for the remaining suspects.
